JOÃO CANIJO

DIRECTOR

Born in 1957, he attended the History course of the Faculty of Letters of Porto and the Cinema Course of the Superior School of Theater and Cinema. He also completed his master’s degree in Film Studies by the ESTC. He was an assistant to Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Alain Tanner, Jorge Silva Melo, Werner Schroeter and Paulo Rocha. Since 1985, his films have been shown at several international film festivals.

He has a parallel career in Teaching, with Workshops, Masterclasses and teaching in areas like Directing, Argument and Interpretation for Cinema, both nationally and internationally. Since 1986 he has also staged theater plays. His films have been the subject of several retrospectives at festivals such as BAFICI in Buenos Aires, BIFF in Busan, La Rochelle International Film Festival and at the Cineteca Nacional de México, among others.
